Abstract

This essay aims to investigate the Women Intellectuals characterized in Park, Kyung Ri's Novels through the women characters' reaction to Power(law, dominant discourse). According to the point of view, the Women Intellectuals are divided into four types : women characters passively resisting law, women characters unconditionally obeying law, women characters deviating from law, women characters taking a ambivalent attitude of resistance and obedience toward law. The first type of women intellectuals yield to law of the family system. But it is formal obedience. Because they can't forget an bygone love loosing by marriage obstacle. They form 'Melancholiac Subject' uniting their ego with the loosing lover. So, they practically deny the identity as wife and mother. This type of women characters passively resist law in the field of power. The second type of women characters form Complaisant Subject. They obey the marriage institution according to the criterions of the dominant discourse without love for spouse. We can notice that these woman characters' identities as wife/mother are empty names. Their social identities such as a patron of the arts, poet are also empty names. Because they marriage and socialize in compliance with the dominant discourse without independent thinking. The third type women characters attempt to form Social Identity by deviating from law, especially family system. They try to succeed in social life by sex peddling. Finally, they fail to form Social Subject. The forth type of women characters are positive images of women intellectuals. Their attitudes toward law are ambivalent. They sometimes resist law, and sometimes obey law. They don't absolutely yield to law and deviate from law. They resist law according to their independent decisions. After resisting law, they obey law and form new (Social) Subject. Through this discussion on the four types of women intellectuals, this essay overcome the limitation of the preceeding investigation which focus on the positive women characters. And, through the positive women intellectuals brought into relief by the negative women characters, we can notice that the resistance to law enabling Subject formation is emphasized in Park, Kyung Ri's Novels.
