Abstract

The contradiction of consciousness is revealed in Yum Sang-Seop’s writings as identifying himself with modern Japanese intelligent people and disgracing Korean as poor and uncivilized. Basically this starts from the instinct to see the civilized, modernized Korean society and he is putting ‘myself’–‘family’–‘nation’ on the same line in his pieces to show the struggle between paternalistic and individualistic ego. Sometimes, his heroes try to find their identities and act like independent men but at the same time, they still lack of economic independence. The nationalism in Yum’s writings insists to prepare the basic frame of a nation by breaking customary family system and by socializing the stream of capital. Yum opposes to the traditional fatherhood that sacrifices his time and money to build up glory and prosperity for his own family but he seeks for the one that sacrifices himself and spend much time for his family. The contradiction shown in his early writings is somewhat restricted to the level of people under control. Also the only resolution he could concentrate was wandering from the main issue that needed something to do with his country.
