Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate Choi Jung-Hee's late 30s' works based on 'motherhood'. Up to recently, a dominant opinion on Choi Jung-Hee's works is that the discord between feminity and motherhood leads the conclusion to motherhood. However, a simple wondering that is it a sound way of reading to interpretate that the heroine who identifies herself with a woman and a mother finally returns to motherhood makes this study started. To settle this wondering, investigating 'motherhood', the feature of Choi Jung-Hee's works, I study how it is formed and what its meaning is. In her works, married and intelligent women appear and their winding lives are settled by means of the topic 'motherhood'. The poor woman who is married but doesn't have husband fixed as a heroine, the hardness and bitterness of her mothering is described with much more concrete experienced narration than that of any other writer in those days. In the process, resisting the patriarchy ideology superficially and giving up or denying motherhood, the heroine ends up returnung to motherhood adjusting herself to the environment. However, this process being made up of a sharp turning failing to make sure of probability or represented as a descriptive summary, it is difficult to accept that the ending is natural one derived from heroine's earnesty. Because of this, though the superficial theme of Choi Jung-Hee's work is motherhood, I think the latent voice from the rear is "something" that needs to be disguised or marked as it is hard to be accepted socially. It is an individual and subjective desire of a woman that is surpressed and unsettled by motherhood ideology or can't be gratified by only motherhood.
