A Study on Female Friendship in Guunmong

This study clarifies the aspect and meaning of female friendship embodied in Kim Manjung’s Guunmong. Even though there are several female characters in Guunmong, relatively few studies have been conducted on relationship among them. If we focus on the intimate relationships of women, the traditional interpretation of Guunmong in which Yang So-yu marries several outstanding women, can be read anew. The female friendship depicted in Guunmong is divided into two aspects: choosing to marry the same man for a one-to-one friendship, and forming a female community by expanding such friendships to a one-tomany relationship through marriage. In the Middle Ages, the female community, such as nuns, functioned as an alternative space or counter space to a patriarchal society. Keeping this in mind, polygamy in Guunmong can also be interpreted as a heterotopia for women’s friendship, not just as a male-centered order. Of course, it is difficult to deny that male desires are embedded in Guunmong. However, if the text is read from a female friendship perspective, its emancipatory meaning can be discovered.
