Abstract

The purpose of this study is to compare rational process of active ageing and productive aging based on the theory of planned behavior. The effect of post-retirement may be influenced by attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control for old aged workers, then we tested the effect of mediating role of post-retirement preparation on active ageing and productive aging. And we conducted additional analyses of mediating role of post-retirement preparation respectively. Conducting a survey research to 192 employed old aged workers, the data was analyzed by Structural Equation Modeling. The result of this study found the positive effects of attitude and perceived behavioral control on active ageing through post-retirement preparation. There were negative effect of subjective norms and positive effect of perceived behavioral control on productive aging through post-retirement preparation. According to additional analyses, the mediating effect of social post-retirement preparation was significant on active ageing, and the mediating effect of emotional and social post-retirement preparation was significant on productive aging. Suggestions for future research and practical implications were provided based on the findings.

Abstract

Happiness research has primarily been conducted based on the American model of happiness. The agentic concept of happiness in the West emphasizes the positive feeling state stemming from individual achievement and positive interpersonal relationships. However, previous studies on lay theories of happiness in other East Asian countries, such as China and Japan, have suggested that these meanings of happiness differ from those of the Western cultural context. The present study examined the lay theory of happiness among Koreans using qualitative and quantitative approaches. Furthermore, the authors compared the Korean model of happiness with that of the Japanese and Americans from Uchida and Kitayama (2009). The findings from the present research indicate that the Korean model of happiness involves both positive and negative states and consequences of happiness, unlike the uniformly positively connoted happiness in Western cultural contexts. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications of the current findings on happiness research in the Korean culture.

Abstract

This research investigated the influence of subjective well-being on attitude towards minority group members. In a cross-sectional data, the higher subjective well-being predicted more positive cognitive beliefs, affective feelings, and behavioral intentions towards foreign laborers and children of international couples. The causal link from subjective well-being to greater tolerance for cultural diversity was found again in a large longitudinal sample. The rate of life satisfaction increase from Time 1 to Time 2 significantly predicted multicultural receptiveness at Time 2. Overall, the findings suggest that subjective well-being may contribute to the formation of favorable attitude towards minority group members.

Abstract

Previous research has demonstrated that imagined contact is useful to reducing prejudice against minorities (e.g. Turner & Crisp, 2010). In this research, we investigated whether imagined contact increases attraction to physically unattractive women, and whether this effect is moderated by perceiver's physical attractiveness and appearance orientation in romantic relationships. Single male participants (n = 98) responded to items assessing their physical attractiveness and appearance orientation, and then were randomly assigned to one of the two conditions. In the imagined contact condition, participants were told to imagine communicating with a physically unattractive woman and come up with some interesting things about her. In the control condition, participants were told to simply imagine a physically unattractive woman. Next, participants saw a picture of a physically unattractive woman and rated her likeability, perceived attractiveness, and willingness to ask her out, which were averaged to form the composite measure of attraction. We found a significant main effect of imagined contact, as expected. This main effect was moderated by appearance orientation, but not by perceivers’ physical attractiveness. The effect of imagined contact was significant among those low in appearance orientation, but not among those high in appearance orientation.

Abstract

This study examines the experiences of 17 ex-offenders’ wives who received housing support by the Korea Rehabilitation Agency using Strauss and Corbin’s grounded theory. In open coding, 143 concepts, 43 subcategories, and 16 categories emerged from the data. In axial coding, the causal condition were ‘ambivalence of wives who encounter the husbands’ release from prison’, ‘anxiety about the husbands’ release from prison and recidivism’, and ‘trials and tribulations of everyday life after husbands’ release from prison’. Central phenomenon was ‘precarious livelihood by concealment of imprisonment’. Strategies were ‘compromise with reality’ and ‘support husbands to reentry to the society’. Consequence was ‘thanks to life via adversity’ and ‘the road less traveled.’ In process analysis, main theme was ‘process towards family resiliency after get over the stigma and family conflicts’, and five phases were derived from the data and in selective coding. Based upon the research outcomes, psychological experiences of ex-offenders’ wives and the needs for ex-offenders’ families resiliency was discussed.

Abstract

The present study aimed at examining the factor structure, reliability and validity of the Korean version of the Continuing Bonds Scale (K-CBS). In study 1, exploratory factor analysis was administered to 293 bereaved adults who had experienced the death of a loved one, and it revealed a single factor structure with 10 items that explained 52.59% of the total variance. The K-CBS showed good internal consistency with Cronbach's alpha of .92. In study 2, confirmatory factor analysis in a different sample of 200 bereaved adults indicated satisfactory standardized regression weights of all items. However, one item had a squared multiple correlation less than .40, hence, this item was discarded, and 9 items remained for the final scale. The single factor model with 9 items displayed a good fit. The K-CBS had strong positive correlation with grief symptoms, and weak positive correlation with depression. After controlling for grief, however, the K-CBS was predictive of a decrease in depression. The K-CBS was positively associated with posttraumatic growth. In addition, significant differences in scores of the K-CBS were shown among groups based on the deceased's relation to the bereaved and expectedness of loss. These results suggest that the K-CBS is a reliable and valid instrument to measure continuing bonds. Finally, implications, limitations, and directions for future research were discussed.

Abstract

This study analysed the published papers dealing with traffic behaviors since 2004 in south Korea. The following information was coded for each papers; year of publication, source, authors, main topic, and subtopic. The annual numbers of publication in 2004 and 2005 showed 6 articles and 7 articles. Since 2006, The annual numbers were increasing more than 10 papers. It means that the researches on traffic behavior were rich. The driver was main topic of 73.2% of articles. Cognition & Perception, Fatigue and Stress, and Alcohol were the main interest sub-topics dealing with main topic driver. Elderly driver was 10.4%, the interest in elderly drivers grew with population aging. And the dominant publications were Journal of traffic safety research, Journal of Korean Psychology Association, and Journal of the Koean Data Analysis Society with 60% of all articles for last 10 years.
