Abstract

This article examines the relationship of career indecision, job search behavior, and employment among college seniors based on sub-scales of career indecision (lack of career information, lack of self-clarity, decisiveness, lack of necessity recognition, external Barrier). This study explored the effect of career indecision, job search behavior, and employment successes(number of application, number of interview, number of job offer) in longitudinal method. In result, career indecision had negative effect on job search behavior. In other words, the higher career indecision level is, the less job search behavior is performed. Especially, career indecision is connected with preparatory job search behavior and informal job search behavior. Another finding is that job search behavior in time 1 (first semester of college senior) had a strong effect on all of employment success variables in time 2(second semester of college senior). Finally, the theoretical and practical implications of this research were discussed. Based on the limitation of this study, several directions for future research were also suggested.

Abstract

The present research examined the proposition that once people violate traffic regulations, they would experience cognitive dissonance and subsequently engage in changing their attitudes toward the law negatively in order to reduce the dissonance. In an experiment, participants were presented with three scenarios in which a person violated trivial traffic laws, and they were asked to imagine themselves as the person of the scenarios and write statements supporting the unlawful behaviors. Participants' attitudes toward the general traffic law and the regulations related to the violations were measured 8 weeks before and right after the experimental treatment. The results, as expected, showed that their attitudes toward the general traffic law and the specific regulations in the scenarios changed negatively after writing the statements. In each scenarios, the participants who chose to wrote statements supporting the unlawful behaviors showed great attitude changes that those who did not write the statements. Furthermore, attitudes toward the regulations that were not directly related to the scenarios did not change significantly, and participants who were expected to experience stronger dissonance arousal (e.g.., supported more unlawful behaviors or had have more positive attitudes toward the law before the experiment) showed greater attitude changes. These results support the effects of trivial unlawful behaviors on attitudes toward the law and strongly suggest the role of cognitive dissonance underlying the effects.

Abstract

Data were collected from 310 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students and parents by questionnaires and analyzed by t-test and multiple regression analysis. The higher parents attachment and parents monitoring, the higher prosocial behavior towards parents and siblings, the higher perspective-taking, the higher prosocial behavior towards parents, and the higher socioeconomic status, the higher prosocial behavior towards siblings. More prosocial behavior toward parents was reported by girls than by boys. Prosocial behavior toward siblings did not show a gender difference. In the total group, high parent attachment and perspective-taking predicted prosocial behavior towards parents; high parent attachment and socioeconomic status predicted prosocial behavior towards siblings. In the boy group, high parent attachment and perspective-taking predicted prosocial behavior towards parents; high socioeconomic status predicted prosocial behavior towards siblings. In the girl group, high parent attachment predicted prosocial behavior towards parents and high parent attachment and socioeconomic status predicted prosocial behavior towards siblings. Discussion focused on the relative importance of parents attachment, perspective-taking, and socioeconomic status in predicting early adolescents' prosocial behavior.

Abstract

Three studies were conducted to examine the degree to which three common heuristics, anchoring heuristic, framing effect and representative-ness heuristic, influence the decision-making processes of actual judges and 5-persons mock juries. With scenarios regarding various issues that are commonly raised in actual criminal and civil trials, study 1 examined the 158 actual judges' decisions. In study 2, the decisions of 80 mock jury groups that consisted of college students were examined with similar scenarios. And individual decisions were examined in study 3 to compare with the group decisions in study 2. The decision processes of the actual judges and the mock jury groups alike were found to be influenced by "anchors". But the biases by the anchoring heuristic were more pronounced in the group decisions than in the decisions of the actual judges. With respect to framing effect, the actual judges were found to be resistant, while a small effect was found in the decisions of mock jury groups. Representative-ness biases weren't found in the decisions of both the actual judges and mock juries. The implications of the results for judicial systems were discussed.

Abstract

This study was to conceptualize Palzha and investigate Palzha inference as mode of self-view. In general, people would like to attribute their unhappy and unfortunate life events or histories to Palzha which is given by the supernatural being. According to analysis of interviews and open-ended responses concerning on Plazha, Palzha indicated 'luck', 'uncontrollable situation', or 'fate' given by the supernatural being. In study 2, we conducted an analysis of the relationship between locus of control belief and Palzha attribution. More having external control belief, more tending to attributing the rugged life events or histories, and unexpected fortunate events to Palzha. Consequently, Palzha as mode of self-view on everyday events or life-events indicated it is likely to be another dimension of attribution on negative as well as positive life events in Korean culture.

Abstract

There is a growing interest in the education of gifted children nation-wide. The present study was performed to find out characteristics of students who are receiving special education as gifted using a new psychological inventory which measures the temperament and character separately. We compared students who have been selected for their talent in math and science with students who do well academically. Academic competence was operationally defined by grades or by IQ. Gifted children are usually thought to be characterized by an innate ability, and it was expected that there would be some difference between temperaments of the gifted group and those of the academically competent group. However, there was no significant difference between the two groups not only in their temperaments, but also in other sub-scales of character. This result suggests that in spite of the extensive effort and cost involved in the selection process, the children who are currently selected as gifted show no distinction when compared to academically competent students. Based on the results some practical suggestions were made in order to improve the selection of the gifted children.

Abstract

Successful Intelligence (SI) developed by R. Sternberg has impacted on various fields such as education and industry, providing with intuitive view-points concerning the definition, nature, and measurement of intelligence. It would be a timely work to review how SI has been progressed, what contributions it made, what it has influenced on intelligence research in Korea, and what the implications of SI for future research are. With that in mind, this review is composed of several sections. First, an overview of the SI's historical development and main characteristics and contributions is presented with three distinct periods: Era of the Componential Theory, of Triarchic Theory, and of Successful Intelligence. Second, Selected researches conducted in Korea based on SI are summarized. Lastly, future research for validation of SI is discussed.
