The Effect of Trust and Social Value Orientation on Cooperative Behavior in Social Dilemma Situation

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the influence on cooperative behavior by trust, social value orientation, fear, greed, and the belief in a just world. A questionnaire was preparedfor this goal, and answered by 185 university students. Based on the analysis of these data, following results are found; those people who trust other people cooperate. And those people who have a value orientation that is prosocial, also cooperate. Fear and greed have a negative effect on cooperative behavior. Trust and social value orientation were rooted in attachment, they were found to develop better when one experienced secure attachment. And trust is related to the relational self and the belief in just world. Those people who empathy with other people and believe that the world is just have strong trust on other people. The future study need to examine variables influencing trust and social value orientation's development.
