초록

Ethogenics 혹은 ethogenic approach는 1972년 Rom Harre와 Paul Secord가 'The explanation of social behaviour'에서 사회심리학에 대한 자신들의 독특한 입장을 표현하기 위하여 사용한 것이 그 嚆矢이다. 微視社會學(microsociology)과 構造人類學(structural anthropology) 및 日常言語分析(ordinary language analysis)의 여러 學問的 傳統을 사회심리학에 接木시키려는 노력(Harre, 1977)으로서의 ethogenics는 전통적인 사회심리학에 대하여 회의를 가져왔던 심리학자들에 의하여 有力한 代案으로서의 철학 및 방법론을 제공하고 있는 것으로 간주되어 注目을 받게 되었고 Harre의 主導 아래 발전하여(Harre, 1979, 1983 ; Harre et al., 1985) 오늘날 Europe에서 Moscovici(1984)의 社會表象(social representation) 연구의 定立과 더불어 사회심리학 연구의 새로운 흐름을 대표한다. Ethogenics (ethos＋genesis)는 Harre에 따르면 사회행위 (social action)의 發生機構를 탐색하는 접근법이다. 이는 생물학이 발달하면서 실험실 內의 연구에서 벗어나 현실생활에서의 生態에 초점을 맞추는 ethology가 등장한 것과 같은 맥락에서 인간의 사회행위의 연구도 실험실이 아닌 현실세계에서 수행되어야 한다는 입장을 취한다. 다만, ethology가 동물이 연구대상인데 반하여 ethogenics는 인간이 그 연구대상이므로 인간과 동물간의 質的 차이를 인정한다면(이 인간과 동물의 구분이 ethogenic approach의 중심개념의 하나인데) 그 연구방법론이 다를 수밖에 없다고 Harre는 주장한다. Ethogenics의 등장은 근본적으로 전통적인 사회심리학에 대한 반발에서 비롯되었다. Harre는 전통적 사회심리학의 paradigm이 인간의 사회행위의 이해에 도움을 주지 못했으며 따라서 사회심리학은 새 paradigm을 요구하고 있다고 말한다. 이제 Harre를 좇아 사회심리학의 전통적 paradigm의 正體와 그 문제점을 살피고 그가 제시하는 새 paradigm을 論議해 보자.

Abstract

Ethogenics, proposed by an Oxford philosopher Rom Harre and his colleagues, rejects the traditional paradigm of social psychology; the mechanistic model of man, the Humean conception of causality, and logical positivism. Instead they argue for a new paradigm. It includes the anthropomorphic model of man, structural explanation, and the emphasis on action rather than behavior. Ethogenics recommends the flexible use of a variety of methodology opposing rigid experimental method strongly advocated by traditional social psychology. Account analysis, analytical models, and repertory grids are typical of ethogenic methodology. It seems that ethogenics and traditional social psychology tap different aspects of social psychology, and can and should supplement each other in order to give a more complete understanding of human social behavior.
